How many footstep sounds does a game need?
One set per surface and several variations per action. How footsteps are organised, why repetition gives them away, and how many files a complete set really is.
- Each surface needs its own set; one generic step breaks the illusion
- Four walk variations per surface stop the machine-gun effect
- Landing, jumping off and stopping each need their own sound
How many footstep sounds does a game need?
For every surface the player can walk on: several walk and run variations, a landing, a jump-off, a stop or scuff, and crouched steps if the game has stealth. That adds up quickly. The Footsteps library ships 17 sounds per surface - four walks, four runs, a landing, a heavy landing, a jump-off, a scuff, a stop, two crouched steps and a walk and run loop - across twelve surfaces, plus 18 footwear and stairs sounds: 222 in all.
Why do footsteps sound repetitive in my game?
Usually because one file plays on every step, which the ear hears as a mechanical pattern within a few seconds. Give each surface several variations, play them in a shuffled order so the same one never repeats back to back, and add a small random change in pitch and volume. Players stop noticing footsteps when they vary, which is exactly the goal.
How does a game play the right footstep for the surface?
Tag the ground with a material - a physics material or tag in Unity, a Physical Material surface type in Unreal - and on each step, usually fired from an animation event, cast a short ray downwards, read the material and pick from that surface's set.
Which surfaces should a footstep set cover?
The Footsteps library covers grass, dirt, gravel, sand, mud, shallow water, snow, wood planks, stone and concrete, metal, carpet and interiors, and leaves and forest floor, which handles most outdoor and indoor levels without mixing sources.
