What makes a good ambience loop for a game?
A background bed that runs for minutes without anyone noticing where it repeats. What an ambience loop needs, how to check the join, and how to layer it.
- The join must be inaudible: no fade, no gap, no click
- A distinctive sound inside a loop gives the repeat away
- Layer a steady bed with occasional one-shots on top
What makes a good ambience loop?
It stays steady, it joins without a fade, a gap or a click, and it contains nothing distinctive enough for the ear to latch onto. A single memorable bird call in a forest bed announces the repeat every cycle; an even wash of leaves and distant birds does not. The level should also stay even, so the loop sits under the mix rather than pulsing through it.
How do I check that a loop is seamless?
Play several cycles back to back and listen at the join, then measure it: compare the first and last fraction of a second against the level of the rest of the file, because a fade at either end dips on every repeat, and check that the waveform continues across the join without a step. Every loop in this catalogue is checked both ways before it ships, because many generated and recorded beds ease in and out by default.
How long should an ambience loop be?
Long enough that the cycle is not obvious; ten seconds of even material is a workable minimum for most beds. The bigger gain comes from layering: a steady loop underneath, with occasional one-shots such as a gust, a distant dog or a creak played at random intervals on top, so no two minutes sound the same.
How do I loop a sound in Unity or Unreal?
In Unity, tick Loop on the AudioSource that plays the clip. In Unreal, enable Looping on the Sound Wave, or put a Looping node in a Sound Cue. Import loops as uncompressed WAV so the engine encodes them only once.
What ambience loops are available?
The Ambience Loop Library has 168 loops across twelve scenes: forest, fields, water and coast, weather, town and city, interiors, industrial, science fiction, fantasy and medieval, horror, vehicles and travel, and tonal drones. The Weather and Nature library adds 58 more loops of rain, wind, fire, water and day-and-night scenes. Free Ambience Loops on itch.io has eight to try, from a city at night to steady rain.
